Newcastle’s Best Beaches

The moment someone mentions “Newcastle, NSW” one of the first things you hear is how beautiful the beaches are. From Stockton in the north to Burwood in the south, Newcastle’s beaches are world class.

Recently we held a poll on our Instagram account asking you “what’s your favourite Newcastle Beach?” As voted by you our #1 rated Newcastle beach is Bar Beach.

Bar Beach

Bar Beach is a perfect all-round beach that caters for every age group. It boasts great surfing and swimming and is home to the Cooks Hill Surf Life Saving Club. “Bar” as Novocastrians call it is situated in the middle of the Newcastle coastline.

Bar Beach is quite unique when it comes to Newcastle’s beaches, many people enjoy its grassy hill which is the ideal spot for an afternoon picnic as the sun sets over the city, kids enjoy swimming at the rock pools located on the northern end of the Beach, and the beach is also home to the iconic Empire skatepark. Merewether Beach

From a national surfing reserve to its mighty ocean baths, the ladies baths, the surfhouse and home to Australia’s largest festival of surfing (Surfest) Merewether ticks just about all of the boxes when it comes to Newcastle Beaches!

A perfect day at Merewether Beach includes a surf or a swim, with a choice of the beach itself, the ladies baths (otherwise known as “the ladies”) or the mighty Merewether Ocean Baths which happen to be the largest ocean baths complex in the southern hemisphere. A coffee from Blue Door Kiosk just about makes Merewether the ideal beachside location in Newcastle.

Newcastle Beach

Newcastle Beach is simple and trendy all at once, from the Ocean baths at one end to the Bogey Hole at the other. Newcastle Beach is often overshadowed by some of Newcastle’s other beaches, but don’t get me wrong, Newcastle Beach is a surfer’s and photographer’s paradise.

Whether it be an early morning coffee from Estabar or the Kiosk, or an afternoon drink at the Surf Club after a long summer’s day, Newcastle Beach caters for just about everyone. Often early in the morning, you will find local surfers tiptoeing around the edge of the canoe pool, to jump in off the rocks and be immediately out the back of the waves.

Newcastle Beach is the ideal spot for a morning jog to or from Nobbys Beach, which is approximately 1 km or a 2 km round trip. Newcastle Beach highlights some of the best waves along the Newcastle coastline. Check out this stunning image from Grant Minns.
